O' Say Can You See - Exhibit at Sanchez Art

It has been a busy year, so I have been posting less. But the good news is that I have been creating a number of exciting and interesting new pieces. And, I am excited to once again be a part of an important exhibit - O' Say Can You See, the soul of our Nation.

Two of my pieces are in this exhibit, which features some amazing art and some wonderful artists. I am proud to be a part of this group and of the message that we are sharing with the world.

Let's start with the two pieces that are in the show and share what I am trying to say with them. The first piece is titled "Where is our True North?"

An oil painting with a broken compass on an American Flag and people in the background
Where is our True North?

This painting is posing a question: Where is our true north as a country? What is it that we as a people want to be, stand for, and project to the world?

I am shocked that we live in a time–in this country–where armed agents roam the streets in masks. I hoped we would never see this here. But it happened.

I believe that this country will re-emerge from a dark period and will come back to its place as true north in a troubled world. There must be that belief. There must still be that ray of light. Can you see it? If you do, let’s go out and bring our country back. We the people can pull ourselves back from the brink. We have that power.

Caution - Fragile (Graphite)

The second piece - as a framed graphite on paper piece - is called "Caution - Fragile".

We protect what we value. We take care of things that are fragile. We wrap these items to make sure they stay safe and in one piece. We keep what is important to us.

In this piece, I use common objects that are familiar to everyone. You know these objects: a box, styrofoam peanuts. And everyone knows the Statue of Liberty–and what it stands for. Putting them together hopefully conveys a simple but strong message: Democracy is delicate and precious.

Please let’s all protect it!

And then there is a piece that I did not submit for this show, as I did want to show the black and white of the graphite rendition...

Caution - Fragile (Oil)

This is of course a piece with the same meaning... I just wanted to create it in oil and have lady liberty pop. I love the black background and then the beautiful green hue of the statue in the box with packing peanuts.

Well, there you have it! Those are my three pieces.

If you are interested in seeing the show - and everyone should - find some time on those busy Bay Area calendars and support our nation in this time of crises all around the world.
